TRANSFORMATION OF QURAN STUDY METHODOLOGY IN INDONESIA: FROM ORAL TRADITION TO WRITTEN INTERPRETATION
AbstractQur'anic studies in Indonesia have undergone significant methodological transformations, evolving from oral tradition to written interpretation. This study addresses academic concerns about the lack of integrated studies that holistically analyze the traditions of reading, writing, and interpreting the Qur'an in Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach based on desk research, this study critically examines primary and secondary sources, including classical and contemporary commentaries, Indonesian standard manuscripts, and scholarly journal articles. The results show that the development of Qur'anic studies in Indonesia has been shaped by the interaction between local culture and global Islamic traditions. Oral transmission methods such as Baghdadiyah and nagham represent the initial stage, which later evolved into written practices such as the creation of standard manuscripts—Mushaf Bahriyyah, Bombay, Braille, and Sign Language—that ensure accessibility and authenticity. In terms of interpretation, Indonesian scholars such as Abdur Rauf Singkili, HAMKA, and M. Quraish Shihab have introduced context-based interpretations that are tailored to socio-cultural realities. This study concludes that Qur'anic studies in Indonesia are dynamic, continually adapting to technological, cultural, and social changes. However, further research is needed to explore interdisciplinary interpretive approaches involving gender, ecology, and socio-political issues. Strengthening contextual and thematic interpretations can strengthen the role of the Qur'an as a responsive and transformative source of guidance for modern Indonesian Muslim society.
