Abstract

This study aims to analyze the role of principal leadership in planning extracurricular programs to strengthen character education in elementary schools. This study uses a qualitative case study design to gain an in-depth understanding of principal leadership practices in the program planning process. Data collection was conducted through interviews, observations, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using an interactive model that includes the stages of data condensation, data presentation, and concluding. The results show that there are five strategic leadership practices of principals in planning extracurricular programs to strengthen character education, namely: (1) conducting a comprehensive needs analysis, (2) setting program objectives oriented towards strengthening student character, (3) building collaborative participation with various stakeholders, (4) designing extracurricular programs integrated with character education values, and (5) overcoming planning challenges through adaptive leadership and optimization of school resources. This study concludes that principal leadership in the planning stage plays a crucial role in strengthening character education by aligning extracurricular programs with student needs, the school's vision, and educational goals. The implications of this study provide direction for the development of evidence-based, collaborative, and sustainable school programs.
