MORAL GOVERNANCE OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: HOW ISLAMIC BOARDING SCHOOLS INTEGRATE AI WITHOUT REPLACING RELIGIOUS AUTHORITY

Abstract


This study examines how Islamic boarding schools govern generative artificial intelligence while preserving religious authority and educational identity. Using qualitative multiple-case study of eight pesantren in Madura, Indonesia, data were collected through interviews, observation, and document analysis. Findings show AI is governed as a instrument serving educational purposes rather than as an autonomous authority. Four mechanisms emerged: governing educational purpose before technology, redistributing epistemic work without transferring authority, moral leadership through epistemic stewardship, and institutional resilience through adaptive innovation. The study develops the Moral Governance of Artificial Intelligence framework linking AI governance with moral responsibility, epistemic legitimacy, and educational leadership.
