Ethical Digital Leadership in Islamic Academia: Institutional Readiness and AI Integration for Soft Skills

Abstract


This study aims to analyze the perceptions of leaders at Private Islamic Religious Higher Education Institutions (PTKIS) regarding the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the development of students' soft skills. The study employs a mixed-methods approach with a sequential explanatory design. Quantitative data were collected via Likert-scale questionnaires involving 95 leaders from 17 PTKIS, while qualitative data were obtained through open-ended responses, observations, and in-depth interviews, followed by thematic analysis. The results indicate that the majority of PTKIS do not yet have written policies regarding AI usage, despite existing initiatives to integrate AI into the development of Semester Learning Plans (RPS), lecturer training, and the utilization of AI-based Learning Management Systems (LMS). Leaders' perceptions of AI tend to be positive, particularly regarding its role in fostering students' critical thinking, communication, collaboration, and leadership skills. However, concerns remain regarding academic ethics, a tendency toward instant learning, and institutional readiness. This study underscores the importance of strategic policies grounded in Islamic values, strengthened digital literacy, ethical digital leadership, and stakeholder collaboration to support the AI-driven transformation of Islamic higher education.
